Ready to travel on an airplane with your pet? One of the most important aspects to traveling on airlines with a dog is to make sure you have the best airline approved dog crate that complies with the airlines rules and regulations. Find out what the USDA regulations are and what rules and regulations that many of the airlines have put in place for flying your furry friend.
USDA Regulations
According to the USDA APHIS there are certain minimum regulations that anyone shipping an animal has to comply with and the airlines are no different. In order to fly with your dog the kennel regulations must meet the size, type and ventilation according to the airlines. The minimum regulations are set forth by the USDA to keep your dog and the handler safe during flight and transportation.
All enclosures need to have a certificate signed and dated by the owner that the kennel is safe and not damaged. The kennel needs to comply with airlines regulations and should not cause suffering or injury to the animal.
Temperatures are an important factor as the USDA and any animal cannot be shipped if the temperatures are lower than 45 degree Fahrenheit unless accompanied by a certification of acclamation from a license veterinary with 10 days prior to shipment.
According to the USDA the handler needs to attempt to contact the primary owner within 6 hours after arrival of the animal terminal cargo facility and record attempt on shipping document for the shipment.
The USDA states that any container to transport a live animal needs to comply to sections 3.137 of the USDA APHIS guidelines and comply with the size, construction, ventilation and safety of container as below:
- Kennel must be a solid and leak proof construction of metal, plastic, or wood with a solid roof and the inside of the kennel must be safe with no pointed objects that could injure the dog during transit.
- Any wheeled kennels must have a way to lock the wheels so the kennel cannot roll or remove wheels for transport.
- Your dogs kennel must have ventilation on all 3 sides and in the door of the kennel to provide adequate air to your dog during transit.
- Kennel must have handles or a way to grip the kennel so that the kennel is upright and balanced when moving your dog while in the kennel.
- Door should be secured at all times; however, not locked so there is easy access in case of an emergency.
- Live Animal labels need to be displayed on top of the kennel and at least one side of the kennel that are at least 1” in height.
-
Upward arrow for kennel direction should be displayed on kennel to keep kennel in the best direction and comfort of your dog.
- No more than 2 puppies should accompany an individual kennel and must be of the same liter.
- Kennels should have some type of material such as towels or paper products to absorb liquids that may occur to keep your dog dry.
- Inside the kennel there must be two dishes one for food and one for water attached safely to the kennel and accessible to handler without opening the kennel. The best placement is on the kennel door.
- Feeding instructions and owner information need to be affixed to the top of the kennel to comply with USDA regulations.
- Dog must have enough room in the kennel that they can stand up without touching the top of the kennel and have room to turn around and lay down.
Now that we have discovered the minimum requirements of the USDA for flying with your dog, I will go on to inform you of the various requirements of many of the airlines that comply with USDA minimum regulations; however, there may be some added requirements above and beyond that the airlines specify to keep your dog safe during the transportation and flight.

What is the Best Airline Approved Dog Crate?
As you can see many of the airlines vary and USDA has many requirements that the airlines must comply with. With in-cabin flight most all the airlines prefer soft-sided kennels as they fit better under the seat in front of you and they are not allowed to be out in the isle. As far as cargo, all airlines in order to comply with USDA require a well ventilated kennel made of heavy-duty material that meet the airline requirement. With my research I have found a few kennels that might fit the bill and hoping I have helped you to have a great flight with your furry friend.

Hi,
I have a 15lb Bijapoo, I have been looking for crates with the correct sizing for Jet Blue. One crate was too large, returned it. The other crate was too small, returned it. I do not want to put my doggie on the “HOLE” . Any suggestions as to what can I do. Someone informed me I could pay for a seat and put her carrier on the seat. Is any thing true on that? I have about 4 months to get with the program; in am concerned. Are the rules on South West any different?
Thank You
What a great idea. I didn’t realise that there were so many rules and regulations when travelling with a dog. It’s nice to think that people have thought through all possible combinations of factors prior to you travelling. I know I hadn’t thought about temperatures and the cage breaking and the dog getting out before. I was just wondering if you were able to give your dogs any water at all for the flight or is that a no-no?
Thanks for a leaving a comment, I love sharing information with people.
There are many regulations that a dog owner needs to take into consideration when flying with a dog not only for everyone around you, but for the safety of the dog as well.
Temperatures when flying can get extreme either cold or hot depending on the temperatures outside, it is extrememly important to adhere to the safety regulations when flying your dog cargo. A sturdy kennel that is airline approved will protect your dog in many ways, if a kennel was to break or the dog to break out you might lose your dog, not ever seeing them again due to anxiety and a strange environment.
As far as water goes, Yes! please give your fur babies water on the flight and totally recommended.
I see on here that it indicates that they must offer your dog food and water at layover and stop locations. Can you specify or give the food or water you want your pets to receive? My dogs have a strict dietary requirement and I would be concerned if they were given just “anything”. Especially when in recent years all the concerns over different brands of food. I would also be concerned about their water sources. I know I sound finicky but I would hate my babies to get sick form a flight.
Hi Christina, glad you had the chance to check out the article for the Best Airline Approved Dog Crate.
I can see where you would be extremely concerned with what the airlines may give your dogs for food if they are dietary restricted. I am sure feeding the wrong food would not make for a good flight. I know it is never good just to change foods even at home and should always be added gradually for best results.
Many of the airlines require you tape a small bag of food to the top of the kennel when flying in order to feed your dog as I do not think they provide food. Another thing to consider is the requirement that you have bowls that can be accessed from the outside of the kennel so airline staff can feed and water your dog safely without having to open the kennel door.
Thanks for the great question I am sure many people would have the same concerns. If you like the information on this site please bookmark this site as I am always updating with new information.
Hello
I truly appreciate all the information you have shared in this post on all the different airlines and I especially find the crate to be interesting, but what about owners with dogs larger than the crates you recommend in your post? I own a very large Rottweiler who has never been in a crate, I imagine they make one large enough but would I have to special order one large enough for a dog his size?
Jeff
Hi Jeff, thanks for leaving a comment. It is important to have a kennel that fits your dog properly to comply with USDA regulations so depending on how big you dog is you may have to have a custom kennel made. I do know that a wood kennel is accepted so that may be an option. Another factor that you might face depending on the size of kennel you need making sure the kennel will fit on the carrier. I have attached the information for carriers here. The giant kennels are only 48″L X 32″W X 35″H and only Delta Airlines will accept the larger kennels. For any Kennels larger than the giant kennels I would suggest calling Delta Cargo to find out what your options are at 1-800-DL-CARGO (1-800-352-2746).
I hope this information is helpful to you and I want to thank you for dropping in to my site. Remember to bookmark my site as I am always adding new information that might be helpful with your furry friend.
