I am sure with you being the owner of a Rotty the Basset Hound does seem like a smaller dog to you. I am excited that you are now considering a Basset Hound, of course, I know I am a bit partial. The Beagle and the Basset are really two totally different dog breeds; however, both coming from the hound family creates the idea that they are related due to the hound coloring. The beagle is a small to medium dog weighing 15-35 pounds, where the basset is a medium to large dog having an average weight of 40-65 pounds and some of the larger Bassets could even weigh a little more. Where the Beagle is more agile the Basset is sturdier and large boned which may make for a good companion to your Rottweiler.

This is a lot of great info on the Basset Hound. My Mom has always loved this breed and has wanted another one for many years. I am considering getting her one but have a couple concerns that I hoping you may be able to help with. She is partially handicapped and has to spend a great deal of time in a wheelchair. Although she is able to walk it is only for limited distance. She lives in the country. She has a wonderful fenced yard with lots of room to run when she lets him/her out. She would not be able to walk the dog. Would this dog in her type of dog in a current physical situation still be a match for her? Would it be happy living the lazy, non hunting lifestyle? Thank you!

I feel that a Basset Hound would be an awesome fit for your mom as they are very adaptable to their surroundings and I know mine absolutely loves country living. A Basset Hound is extremely content to have a human to love and is normally quite docile and a very loyal breed. Originally bred for hunting the Basset Hound today has taken on a more laid back personality and is really quite happy to play in a fenced yard or you might find them relaxing in the sun. If they do feel the need to hunt an occasional squirrel that might pop into the yard may become a target but normally quick enough to get away. Oh yes and my Abby enjoys chasing flies (what we call sky raisins).
My only concern and it would be something that you could work around, is that Basset Hounds due to the heavy weight of the breed should never be allowed to jump off of higher surfaces such as platform type beds as they could injure their paws or legs, I have to lift mine up and down off the bed. If your mom has a lower bed, or the dog not allowed on the bed this would not be an issue. In the case that the bed is too high for the Basset they make wonderful pet stairs that would help as well.

Hello Dena, I was very interested in your comment about the Beagle. I recently adopted a rescue dog that I was told is a Beagle, Basset Hound mix. She has the brown head & neck of a Beagle, almost deer like, with a white strip from nose to the forehead but her body is white with small black spots & large black patches,. She has a somewhat thick body & legs, big feet & deep bark of a basset & the brown full tail with the white tip of a beagle.
She’s taller than a basset & loves to chase squirrels in the back yard. Her temperament around other dogs is friendly & non aggressive. Whatever her breed, she is a sweetheart.
Your comment makes her more endearing to me. To think she was almost put down after being in the pound for a long time makes her more special to me.

Hi Dixie, thanks so much for leaving a comment and thanks so much for rescuing that sweet baby, every dog deserves a great home. Many times people mistake our basset hounds for beagles as they are similar but yet totally different dogs. It sounds like your baby took on many of the characteristics of the basset hound as they can be many different colors, and white with black spots is a common trait. Both breeds generally have the brown, black and white coloring; however, bassets can range in colors taking on a red or yellow coloring as well. I am just guessing but the small black spots sounds like what is called ticking in the Basset Hound breed, we like to call them freckles. The white tip on the end of the tail is both a trait for the Beagle and the Basset Hound as it helps with finding the shorter dogs in the brush when hunting. From reading your description it does sound like you have a Beagle and Basset mix.

Basset Hounds are really quite cute with their sad eyes and long ears; however, you have to watch them as they can use their cuteness against you and talk you out of just about anything. I am so glad that you enjoy the origins and history of the basset hound and they really are an awesome breed.
Basset Hounds have no problem living in an apartment as long as they are walked frequently as they are not a high energy dog, the problem that I can see that you might have would be with the deep, loud bark as they are very vocal and may disturb your neighbors.
