Many Dog owners face the detrimental fact that fleas are a natural parasite that makes dogs miserable. Having seven dogs I find that I hate the summer months as that seems to bring the fleas out in force and combatting them can be a challenge.
The market is blown up with all types of remedies to combat these nuisance little pests from flea collars to spot treatments. With all the hype nowadays of trying to have an all natural dog brings up a question hopefully I can answer for you. How can you get rid of dog fleas naturally?
For years I have broke down and bought chemicals to get rid of fleas and each time I hope that they will not have ill affects on my hounds, as you have to keep them furbabies free from fleas as they are definitely not healthy for them or the humans.
Keeping Our Hounds All Natural
As I have become more natural about what I use and eat the need for my hound dogs to be more natural is now a priority. I absolutely hate having to use chemical laden pharmaceuticals on my furry friends, and I love the idea of treating my pack naturally so have began research in trying to keep my babies all natural and still free of fleas.

As I have found and shared with you in this article, there are many different ways to get rid of fleas on dogs naturally. Using diamaceous earth, vinegar, essential oils, and or boric acid will really help you get a handle on keeping you dogs and your home free of fles.

I agree that trying to get rid of fleas naturally can be a problem. No one wants to use hard chemicals all the time if they can avoid it. I really like your idea about Apple Cider Vinegar. It seems like a wonder gift from mother nature and a must have pantry item. Thanks for all these great suggestions. I will give some a try next time we have fleas. Thanks again.

I do keep my pantry stocked at all times with Apple Cider Vinegar and it has so many great benefits not only for the dogs but for you too. I normally keep a bottle with half water and half apple cider vinegar to spritz on the dogs for help in flea control. I generally add a bit to their water bowl as well, always making sure it is the kind with the mother my choice for that is the Braggs brand of apple cider as it is more organic. Adding the Apple Cider Vinegar to the water creates a more acidic skin and coat, which help repel the fleas. Another all natural product that can be used in bedding, outside and on your dog is the diatomaceous earth you can read more information here.

Wow I have learned so much from your post! I HATE using those chemicals on my fur babies and I am so thankful to find out that there are many all natural remedies that work. I am convinced! I know my little Lola hates having those chemical spot treatments applied. She acts like I’ve done something horrible and I feel bad when I use them. I will start using either plain vinegar or apple cider vinegar immediately! Do these tips also work on cats? I would consider using the Diatmaceous Earth on my yard but I live on several acres so I might have to take small steps in getting that on. Love your site and I’m bookmarking it so I can come back and visit again!
Hello Brenda, and thanks for stopping by!
I am so glad you were able to learn from my post as my goal is to help everyone with fur babies keep them healthy, happy and well-adjusted.
I hate having to use chemicals on my fur babies as well and that is why I have done so much research in finding all natural ways to combat many issues that dog owners face. I know the look you are talking about that our fur babies give us when they are not sure if we know what we are doing to help them. It really makes you wonder what they are thinking.
I love using the apple cider vinegar as you can mix it in a spray bottle with equal parts and mist it on your dog for protection against those pesky parasites and if soften their fur too. Don’t forget to add a teaspoon per liter of water as that will help and is so beneficial to your fur baby.
From what I understand many of the benefits for dogs are the same for cats as well. I think with a cat as they generally don’t care for water or being sprayed I would take and soak paper towels in the solution to wipe on your cat, much like a baby wipe. I think by using this method they would feel like they are being carressed instead of tortured we all know how cats can be.

Nice recipes and tips for flea removal on dogs. I have a dog and I know it’s hard to keep them off especially when you have cats around. I may try some of these sprays to see if they help thanks.
Thanks so much for leaving a comment, I really enjoy hearing from my readers.
The sprays really are nice as you can just spritz them lightly and they are ready to go. I know anytime there are extra furry friends in the home it can be even more of a problem to deal with. I really like the apple cider vinegar, as it has an added bonus, not only does it help with fleas but also softens the fur on your dog and the smell dissipates when dry.

Being a dog owner for most of my life since a boy I am concerned about the flea and tick medications and products on the market to apply to my dog, I have only been using them when I absolutely had too. I am going to just add some essential oil on my dog from now on and see how that works, I use essential oils for me so why not my dog.
Jeff
Thanks for the comment and I hope I have helped you with using a more natural way of combatting the flea population on our fur babies.
I am glad you take the initiative to battle fleas and ticks as they are very uncomfortable for your dog and can cause many skin irritations or worse. Essential oils are a fantastic natural substitute to the chemical laden drugs out on the market to get rid of fleas and ticks. A couple things to remember when using Essential oils on your dog is they have a very sensitive nose so the oils can affect their breathing so never use an Essential oil without diluting it with water or adding it to a carrier oil such as Olive oil. You can mix with water and to help the water and oil mix I add a bit of alcohol then shake real well and spritz lightly on you dog, again not over doing it. I would start out with using only a small amount and see how you dog reacts.
Thanks for visiting my website and let us know how Essential oils is working for you if you decide to go that route. Remember if you find the information on this site helpful to bookmark the site and come back often as I am always adding more information.
I like the idea of using DE for fleas because it is natural. It is a messy venture though I have seen and read that elsewhere as well. I have also read that it is ok that your dogs lick and take this orally as well. Do you have to keep diatomaceous earth on your dogs all the time?
Thanks for leaving your comment and you have a great question as well.
I would say that it is best to keep diatomaceous earth(DE) on your dogs all the time during the summer months or when the fleas and ticks are out. Sprinkle it down the spine of your dog and rub into the skin by back brushing if needed. Reapply weekly or if you dog gets wet. If you happen to have a flea infestation you can apply every few days as needed to get rid of the fleas; however, applying to often can cause dry skin. It seems like there is always a side effect to everything.(Remember not to inhale the fine dust or let the dog inhale it as it can cause breathing problems)
Yes, there is no problem if they lick it off as it can be sprinkled on thier food, 1 tablespoon for dogs over 55lbs and a teaspoon for smaller dogs and puppies. Make sure you always use the food grade diatmaceous earth. When using orally it has many benefits such as combatting internal parasites to include worms even helps control heartworm. Silica a trace mineral in DE is great for the lungs, heart and liver.
