How Dog Allergies Affect Your Dog
Most all allergies will affect your dog by causing them to itch and will cause irritation to the skin. The irritation may be at the base of the tail, paws, ears, face or underarm area or genital area. Trying to figure out exactly what your dogs allergen is can be complicated as so many times the triggers are common for many allergens.
If allergies are left untreated you are setting your furry friend up for a secondary bacterial or yeast skin infection causing hair loss and open sores on your dogs skin.
Dog Food Allergy
Food allergies in our dogs can be really hard to pinpoint what they are allergic to and many times you may find if you are feeding your dog a food containing many fillers that it just may be the food you are feeding them. Generally a good nutritional dog food will not have all the fillers and may solve your food allergy problem for your dog. Read the ingredients and see if changing your dogs food eliminates the food allergy.
Three of the most common food allergies consist of wheat, corn and soy and trying to pin down the exact allergen may result in feeding chicken and rice for 12 weeks and then adding back in other foods slowly to see if they have a reaction. This may be a bit costly and I always recommend working with your vet to make sure your dog is receiving all the vitamins and minerals needed while attempting to find out what your dog is allergic to.
Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD)
Fleas are little parasites that seem to love our dogs, many times when dogs have fleas, they do not affect the dog much; however, if you have one that is allergic to fleas if could amplify into a major battle. The dog really is not allergic to the fleas themselves but when a flea bites a dog that is allergic the saliva from the fleas cause the allergic reaction.
A dog that is allergic to fleas will have a tendency to scratch and bite right above the tail and left untreated may lead to infections such as yeast or bacterial infection. The best remedy for fleas is avoidance; which, is not always possible. If you find the allergy is fleas it is best to treat your dog and your home promptly and then after talking with your vet you may want to implement an all natural treatment that is right for you and your dog.

Environmental Allergens
Environmental allergens can be contacted either outdoors, or inside you home and difficult to determine exactly what the allergen is related to. If you furry friend only seems to have allergies during certain seasons of the year more than likely you are dealing with an outdoor allergy most prominent in spring and summer months and allergens may consist of pollens, grasses, trees ect…
If your find that your dog is seems more susceptible to allergies all year long it may be something inside your home such as cleaning products, furniture, dust mites or even cigarette smoke that may be affecting for dog. Indoor allergies may be avoidable by removing the allergen that is affecting you dog.

CBD Oil
CBD oil seems to be the new miracle oil and can be used in various ways with your furry friends. CBD oil is being used to help with pain, anxiety, boosting immune system, infections, antioxidant and the list goes on and on. As more research is conducted many scientific studies show that CBD oil is effective when relating to allergies, especially allergies regarding the skin. CBD oil can be used both internally and topically.
Using CBD oils with our dogs we have found that using it internally and topically by adding a few drops of the CBD oil to coconut oil really makes a difference when using it for fleas dermatitis or atopy. Directly applying this mixture to irritated area has shown relief in my dogs and amplified healing of the area affected. I simply just put a tsp of coconut oil in my gloved hands and add a few drops of the CBD oil and apply to the affected area.

My Thoughts on Dog Allergies Home Remedies
Knowing there really is no cure for allergies in dogs except for avoidance and understanding that there are many allergies we simply cannot avoid. I feel the best alternative to using pharmaceuticals and avoiding side effects is keeping treatments natural and staying in contact with your vet.
I have always used coconut oil on my dogs for any skin issues related to allergies with great success. I really like the fact that I now have the option to add the CBD oils with the coconut oil giving it that extra boost that seems to expedite healing the skin irritation. I believe treating your dog naturally and finding the best remedy for your dog is the best way to overcome the dreaded allergies and no worries about side effects. Please always make sure to keep your vet up-to-date when using all natural products.
Excellent article! I’ve been waiting for it in the hopes of finding a way to help my little Lola! I now know what to do and I know she will feel so much better soon. I am definitely going to order some of the CBD Oil. It sounds amazing! Lola and I both thank you for sharing this extremely useful information!
Hi Brenda, thanks for stopping by and I am so glad you found my article helpful.
CBD Oil really has helped with my dogs both with anxiety and arthiritis pain, I even used it on poor Abby when she was diagnosed with growing pains. Sassy and Priscilla both have arthritis and they are getting around so much better now that they have been taking the CBD Oil. Abby was limping real bad and I thought she had hurt her foot or leg, was not sure at the time, so took her to the vet. After x-rays, we found that she was suffering from growing pains and at $4.00/pill for Rymadil and of course the side effects that goes along with it, I really did not want to continue giving it to her. I tried the CBD Oil and she has not limped since, I was estatic.
Thanks again for your comment and I am attaching a link directly to the CBD Oil that I use for me and my fur babies just click here to order. If you have any questions please let me know I would love to help.
Hello Dena,
You wrote this post just in the nick of time, I have a question which natural remedy would you suggest for my mother’s dog who chews her feet until they are raw. The vet gives her some sort of medication which does help, but it is very expensive and with my parents on a fixed income with many medical bills they need a less expensive treatment plan.
Jeff
Hi Jeff, thanks for visiting and leaving a comment.
I really hate to hear that your mother’s dog is having a problem. I know that chewing paws can have different reasons so depending on if it is an allergy, boredom or arthritis depends on what you can do to help. If your dog is chewing her paws raw it is best to use either honey or coconut oil, both have antibacterial and healing properties that may really help with recovery. I would also make sure to wrap them in gauze and tape or your dog will lick it off and just start chewing again. I would think if your mother’s dog has seen a vet it is probably due to allergies or arthritis. For arthritis I would recommend CBD Oil as it has worked wonders with my older dogs and if it is allergies coconut oil might be the ticket. You might want to check out my new post on How Coconut Oil Benefits Dogs by clicking here.
Sure hope this helps as I know when you have extra medical expenses when living on a fix income can be difficult. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask as I would love to help.
I did not realise that animals could develop allergies to their environment as well. Obviously I knew that humans did, but I did not realise how common it was in animals. The allergies are also almost the same as what happens in humans as well. Wow! Thanks for opening up my eyes. I didn’t realise that so many of the most common all natural solutions are the same as in people as well. Apple cider vinegar, coconut oil and baking power are very common pantry items that most people would have at home. It’s nice to know what to do when this situation arises. Thanks for sharing this valuable information.
Hi Glenys, great that you could stop by and check out my article on Dog Allergies Home Remedies, I really enjoyed reading your comment.
Dogs do have many of the same allergies as humans they just tend to be a bit different. All natural remedies seem to be a lot more cost efficient and so much better for your dog than giving them all the chemicals, generally with no side effects that come with prescription drugs or over the counter. I am really happy to share this information as I would love to help make every dog healthy, happy and well-adjusted. If you would like to read more on how coconut oil benefits dogs click here to check out my aticle I just posted.
Hello Dena,
I’m glad that you spoke about the herbal flea powder. I know that fleas can cause allergic reaction in dogs, but I didn’t know that it was the saliva that’s the culprit. It’s helpful that you provide information on the types of herbs to use.
I am also very glad that you mentioned CBD oils. As someone in the pain niche I’m always looking for natural remedies to recommend to pain sufferers who want to ditch the pain pill. A friend of mine who suffers from chronic pain had mentioned CBD Oils to me recently, but I hadn’t really looked into it. Your post has given me the nudge, and I think I’ll look it into more as an alternative therapy for pain management. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for leaving a comment I always love hearing from my readers! I am so glad you feel this article was helpful.
The homemade flea powder is a deterrent as it does not kill the fleas; however, by keeping them away keeps them from biting our pets. When a flea bites our dogs it leaves saliva in the bite and for dogs that have an allergic reaction to the flea bites can suffer greatly with flea dermatitis causing them to itch.
CBD Oil is really worth the research as people are taking this supplement for many different symptoms and having great results. I know I have used it for shoulder pain and it really helps. A couple of my dogs have stiff joints due to arthritis and I have seen a major improvement on how they are able to move better, almost like puppies again. For a start on research you might want to visit my article on CBD Oil and Dogs and if you follow my links it will give you even more information on not only dogs but humans as well. If you have any questions let me know as I would love to help.
This is a very helpful post for all dog owners, I have talked to many dog owners with dogs with allergy symptoms over the years. I will share this post with them so they can read all these awesome tips for themselves, our dogs immune systems are in danger just as much as ours.
Jeff
Thanks for leaving a comment and so glad that you want to share it with friends!
You are so right in the fact that with all the chemicals now days our dogs immune systems are in danger. Just like our own bodies, when we put chemicals in our bodies whether it is ingested, inhaled or contact with the skin the body has to fight harder to ward off the unpleasantness that these substances cause to the body. When a dogs immune system is low then allergies may appear, along with so many other issues. It is always best to try to build the immune system for both our dogs and ourselves to stay at the peak of our health and the less chemicals we can put in our bodies and use healthier alternatives the better ones immune system will be.
I do not have wood hounds but I have furbabies and I love your site! I am always learning so much! My furbabies will be thanking you. I was recently introduced to CBD and find it great for me. Being able to help my dogs out with it too will be good. I know how great it can be. I do not think you said in your article but I will assume that it is ok for me to use the pure hemp cbd. In my state that is the only legal type allowed. I always leave your site equipped with greater Dog Mom knowledge 🙂
Thanks so much for leaving a comment and I am delighted that you love my site and gaining knowledge for your furry friends. It is ok that you do not have hounds and much of the information I post here on my site is for canines in general. I may seem a bit partial to hounds; however, I love all dogs and have owned quite a variety over the years.
It is awesome that you have been introduced to CBD oil as it is a great all natural supplement for animals and humans alike. Yes a pure full spectrum CBD Hemp Oil is the best and legal in all 50 states, Mexico and the UK to name a few. I do recommend that you get CBD Oil without the THC for you dogs. THC can actually be toxic to your dog due to dogs having more cannabinoid receptors than humans. Click here to find out more about the CBD oil I use with my dogs.
I am really excited that you are enjoying my site and I would love for everyone that comes to my site, to walk away with a little more knowledge to help keep our fur babies healthy, happy and well-adjusted.
Food allergies! My mini schnauzer used to have that, and it was so heart breaking to see how much she suffered. Thankfully, I found a pet food brand that stopped the allergies.
If only I found your website earlier, I could have made her life so much easier earlier. Now that I know, I will bookmark this page and use the home remedies you suggested for my future doggy friend.
I love all the home made remedies, and prefer the natural ones. I like the coconut option, and see that you use it for your pet friends. Sounds like the perfect solution. Plus, it will make them smell so nice! 🙂
I really appreciate the comment and it is so important to take care of allergies in dogs.
I do use the coconut oil on my dogs as it seems like the only thing that can give Priscilla any relief from just one flea bite. Coconut oil is really a wonderful all natural fruit to use with both you and your dogs. Coconut oil is made up of medium chained fatty acid which is very advantages to our bodies. Within the fatty acids coconut oil is made up of 48% Lauric acid; which accelerates healing and works as an antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. Coconut oil also improves skin, improves digestion and reduces allergic reaction. I always have a jar of the cold pressed organic coconut oil in the pantry for times like these. Just this year I have started using a couple drops of CBD Oil with the coconut oil and it seems to be healing even faster.
Thanks again and please bookmark this site for future reference when needed.
