It is wise to know How To Keep Your Dog Healthy. The signs below show that your dogs are in good health.

Skin and coat: healthy skin of a dog is smooth and flexible. It is good to check for lumps and bumps white scurfy flakes, scabs or red areas, which are all possible warning signals. The healthy and normal color skin tones of your dog may vary from pink to black and may be a mixture of both.

Examine your dog for ticks, lice, fleas, and other external parasites. The indication of fleas may differ from no obvious signs to severe itching. It may include scratching of the lower back or tail base. Close examination shows small black dots. A healthy coat will be glossy and flexible, dandruff free and excessive greasiness.

Eyes: the healthy dog’s eyes are bright and shiny. There should be no swelling or inflammation of the lining eyelids. A little number of watery tears and mucus is good, but more watery eye discharge and any yellow-green pus are all signs of eye problem. For a healthy dog, the white part of the eyes should not be red or yellowish.

Ears: Another sign of good health in a dog is that the skin inside the ears should be light pink and neat. Some yellow or brownish wax is good, but it is not good with a large amount of wax. It is abnormal for the inside of the ear to swell or have redness. There should be no scratching of the ears or repeated shaking of the head in a healthy dog.

Teeth: Your dog’s teeth should be white and shiny. There should be no smelling of the breath. In addition, the gums should be firm and pink or spotted.

Nails: Another sign of good health in a dog is strong nails. Nails should be strong and held trimmed.

Nose: The nose of a healthy dog does not actually need to be moist and cold; however, it must not be dry or cracked.

Smell: A healthy dog should free from smell, well as much as possible as anyone that has owned a hound knows they have a distinctive hound smell. Your dog can get wet and stinky when they roll in substance. Nevertheless, a dog’s owner should visit the veterinarian when a clean dog has an  unusual odor from the eyes, ears or gender-specific parts.

Tail: Another sign of good health is that your dog’s tail should be wagging rather than a droopy tail, which indicates ill health.

Coughing: a cough may or may not be an urgent need of the veterinarian’s attention. This can be caused by simple something or pneumonia. When you are not sure of the reason for the coughing, the best thing is to visit your veterinarian for the best advice.

Severe pain: if your dog is panting, vocalizing and demonstrating other signs of agony. It is necessary to visit a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Dog owners should be aware of the basic aspects of the dog’s health. Such kinds of awareness help a person to keep his dog physically and mentally healthy. Symptoms that indicate that the dog is affected by any kind of physical or mental disorder should not be ignored. The reason behind the appearance of such symptoms should be identified and prescribed medication should be provided to protect the dog against any kind of disorder.

The key to keeping your dog from eating wood, as with anything you don t want them to ingest, is to keep it away from them. Understandably, keeping wood away can be more difficult given your environment, especially if you live near a forest or wooded area.

Thanks for leaving a comment, Yes it is true to keep your dogs from eating the things they should not, you should try to keep them away from items that they might ingest that do not agree with their systems. We know as dog parents we do not ever intentionally let our dogs eat things they should not; however, trying to keep them away from everything that will harm them we would have to lock them in a bubble. I know mine are always finding something, I feel sometimes it is like having a bunch of two year olds in the house and taking things our of their mouths that they should not have. Thanks for helping keep our dogs healthy, happy and well-adjusted.

What a great article! You have made some clear and concise observations about our beloved pets and what we can do to keep them healthy and happy. I am fortunate that my little Lola has never shown an interest in trash cans. I know how they can cause some real problems. However, my fat cat Morris has a tendency to want to get in there and find out if there’s anything he can eat. Luckily, I have my trash cans set up in a way that he can’t succeed. I also hear him digging around and I can keep him from doing any damage. Your section on nutrition was quite interesting. I did not know that basically all food is created equal. Guess I have fallen into the hipe shown on TV, so I learned something today! Thanks again for a great article!

Hi Brenda, thanks for leaving a comment and understand trying to keep trash cans away from pets, you never know what they will end up eating. I actually have one of those in the cabinet type to keep this from happening with my bunch and it works nicely, until the day they learn how to open it and then will have to get a lock. There are standards and nutritional guidelines enforced by the FDA for most all dog foods; however, some of the companies go above the guide lines for a more complete food. It is always best to check your labels and I feel a food with a higher protein level is always best.

    Hello Dena,
The last time I had a dog was when I was a child in South Africa. Her name was Jackie and we went everywhere together–actually it was more like I went everywhere and she followed me to make sure I was safe. She was very protective of the family and me in particular. In any case, I am always glad to stop by your site because I learn so much. I ‘m going to make sure that I show this post to my neighbor as she is a dog owner and would find the tips very useful. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for leaving a comment and so glad you visit regularly, I strive to use my experience and gather as much information as I can when posting an article. Dogs do tend to try to keep us safe; however, sometimes it is just from the leaves falling… and yes many breeds pick a special person in the family that they are closer to. I am so glad you enjoy this site and share it with neighbors as I love talking with others about the hounds.

    Hi Dena,
I agree with you that your dog deserves a happy, healthy and well adjusted life… we all do. It’s nice to know that some people care about their “fur babies” enough to really put their heart and soul into understanding how to best meet the needs of their beloved pet.
I agree that restlessness and loss of appetite are all good indicators that you need to take your fur baby to the vet and get them checked over. I think that a once per year check up is enough to give your dog the “once over” and know that they are happy and healthy and living life to the fullest.

Hi Glenys thanks for leaving a comment, there are many people who care about their fur babies, and acknowledge them as family members and want what is best for them. There are many different indicators that a dog may need to go to the vet and the better you are in tune with your dog the quicker you will realize it. I am constantly watching my dogs for changes in behavior and I always know when there is a problem with one of them. Once a year vet check is good for most of their years but as they get older have that extra check is piece of mind. Thank again for your comment and helping to keep our dog healthy, happy and well-adjusted.

I always learn a lot by visiting your page! My dogs are getting up there in years. 11 and 9. The vet never said anything about increasing their vet checks to twice a year. I see where that makes sense. Especially my older pup. I guess as pet parents we have to take the initiative sometimes to get on our vets about more routine check-ups! Should it concern a pet owner when their pet care personal do not take those extra steps for regular check-ins on our pets? I am thinking of switching vets, not just because of this but have for a time now.
These are great tips, in general, to have around. I am going to share these with my daughter, as a new dog mom these will come in handy for her as well!

Thanks so much for leaving a comment and I am glad you visit often. I do think as pet parents we do need to take the initiative. I think many times our vets leave it up to us to bring them to the vet when we feel it is right. I think the yearly thing is basically for getting their shots, so it is a standard practice for vets to recommend yearly. Our dogs as they get older can develop issues rather quickly and I feel if you can head them off before it becomes a problem the better off our fur babies will be. I really appreciate you passing this article on to your daughter and hope she enjoys it as well.
