Annual Awareness Month

National Heartworm Awareness Month – Is Your Dog At Risk?

With Spring upon us, April is a great month for National Heartworm Awareness Month. Heartworm is a fatal disease and it is best to become aware of the risk and start prevention now.

Watch video to learn more about Heartworms from the AVMA

What Is It – The American Heartworm Society recognizes April as National Heartworm Awareness Month. As they say, it is a great time to get to know your enemy and help arm ourselves with awareness and prevention to keep our dogs from contracting this fatal disease.
Why Celebrate – Is your dog at risk? You bet! Heartworm cases have been found in all 50 States in the US and many other countries worldwide.

Where there are mosquitoes there is a chance that your dog may end up with the Heartworm disease. Yes, mosquitoes are the carrier of this disease. The way it is transmitted is by a mosquito biting an infected animal and then biting your dog, we know ourselves how hard it is to keep from being bit by these pesky parasites and the same holds true for our dogs.

With that said, that is a great reason to share the awareness of Heartworm disease in the month of April, and prevent this disease from infecting your dog and those of others.

How to celebrate – We can never be educated enough when it comes to the health of our dogs so arm yourself with learning about Heartworm disease and know what steps to take to prevent it. Make sure to share what you learn with other dog lovers and help spread the word that prevention is the best tactic to combat this disease.

Another way to celebrate National Heartworm Awareness Month is scheduling that annual Heartworm test with your vet and make sure your dog is on preventatives for the disease. There are lots of different preventatives out there so make sure to talk to your vet and get the one that is right for you and your dog.

Hazards – Leaving your dog unprotected from this disease can result in your dog contracting Heartworm disease. This may result in the Heartworm multiplying and growing a foot long inside the lungs and heart of your dog blocking arteries and causing a heart attack.
Gifts for dogs – Showing you love your dog by getting them on a preventative is the best gift you can give your dog and of course a healthy treat to go along with it would be a great gift for that furry friend.
Annual Awareness Month

National Greyhound Adoption Month – Are they really a 40mph Couch Potato?

Greyhounds do make great pets, April celebrates the Greyhound and the efforts to adopt retired Greyhounds into loving homes.

What is it – National Greyhound adoption month is celebrated annually and was introduced in 2010 by The Greyhound Project working to educate everyone in this gentle loving breed and how they make great pets.

Why Celebrate – Greyhounds are bred for racing, but what happens to these wonderful creatures after they are retired? There are many organizations that work to place these dogs in loving homes somewhere between the ages of three and five when they are no longer required to race.

The Greyhound Project works year-round to help educate people on the nature of these dogs and helps prospective owners learn more about these sight-hounds and the breed to help determine if a retired Greyhound might be right for your family.

Now to understand if a Greyhound is merely a couch potato the answer is yes. The Greyhound is a rather laid back gentle dog that works well with positive training tactics.

Greyhounds normally like a good 15-20 minute walk a few times a day for exercise and if space allows will run around a few minutes to burn off any pent up energy they may have.

I believe all dogs should be indoor dogs but for the Greyhound, it is an important factor when deciding to adopt as they have a very light coat and do not tolerate the cold and heat well. The good thing is most Greyhounds do not have that doggie odor and are very easy to maintain with light brushing a couple of times a week.

How to celebrate – Celebrating through the adoption of one of these retired Greyhounds is a good choice if you are ready to share your home with a dog. Most Greyhounds come kennel trained and are easily house trained and do not bark much if any, so they are very adaptable to most living arrangements.

If you are not ready to provide a home to one of these retired Greyhounds then making a donation of time, money or both is a way to show support of these retirees while waiting on their furever homes. Get Involved and contact one of the organizations and share on social media.

Hazards – Due to not being associated with small dogs or cats the Greyhound might not work well in families that already have established smaller animals.

Greyhounds love to run so it is advised to never let them run off-leash unless they are in a fenced area. They are fast and because they are sighthounds they may not find there way back home.

Gifts for dogs – For positive reinforcement training you will need treats for your dog or a favorite toy.
Annual Awareness Month

National Pet First Aid Awareness Month – Are you prepared in case of an emergency?

Is your dog’s first aid kit ready and are you prepared if the unthinkable happens? The month of April is the time to heighten the awareness and celebrates National Pet First Aid Awareness Month.

What Is It – National Pet First Aid Awareness Month was established to create awareness for Pet First Aid. Sponsored by The Red Cross and many vets nationwide it is best to get in the know and find out what to do in case you are faced with an unexpected pet emergency situation.
Why Celebrate – Your dog’s vet should always be the first thought when you are faced with a health problem or accident. What do we do in the interim while trying to get your dog to the vet? That is where Pet First Aid is an important factor in your dog’s life.

Dogs are notorious for eating things that are not edible. They have to sniff and taste everything to see what it is all about. Even though we try to be cautious dog parents there are times a dog might get ahold of something that could cause them to choke or is poisonous to there systems.

Do you know what to do if a dog is injured or in an accident? Dogs do not understand the dangers that might lead to sniffing out that favorite scent and what trauma might lay ahead.

Being prepared and understanding what you can do as a pet parent could be a matter of life and death to our fur babies that mean so much to us. Are you prepared to react to an emergency situation? Let’s find out how we can celebrate and share awareness throughout the month of April.

How to celebrate – Many of us have first aid kits for ourselves; however, do you have one for your dog? Putting together a first aid kit and keeping it up-to-date is vital when you have pet children. April is a great month to pull it out and check the contents each year.

Do you know where all your dog’s health records are? Here at The Wood Hound, we have a notebook that is readily available with all the health records for each of our dogs right at our fingertips. If you do not have something like this now is a great time to get it all together in one place. I put together a free Disaster/Crisis/Emergency Ebook that also includes a checklist to put together a First Aid Kit, just for the celebration this month and to help you celebrate. You can get access by clicking the button below.

Another way you might want to celebrate is by taking a pet first aid course through The Red Cross for a small fee or downloading their app to know how to react in case the unthinkable happens.

Have you seen the infographic over at 1800petmeds it is a great resource for awareness facts and tips to share with other pet parents so they can help share the awareness of National Pet First Aid?

Hazards – Poisons are big on the list when it comes to providing first aid to pets. Do you know what plants to avoid or what toxins are in chemicals and what you can do? The ASPCA has an animal poison control line just for times like these.
Gifts for dogs – Put together a first aid kit for your dog they might not understand the significance but you will in times of emergencies. Put a treat on top they will think it is the best gift ever.
Annual Awareness Month

Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month – How Can You Help Protect Your Dog?

If biting fleas are not enough, April brings awareness to our loving dog parents through Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month. Providing information and education you need to know about Lyme Disease.

What Is It – According to the AVMA, two organizations joined forces, The Lyme disease Foundation, and Merial LTD and named April as the official Prevent Lyme Disease In Dogs Month. They are on a mission to educate dog parents on how Lyme disease can affect your dog and what you can do to prevent it.

Why Celebrate – Deer Ticks are another parasite that will latch on to your dog and if they are infected with Borrelia Burgdorferi, your dog could be diagnosed with Borreliosis or better known as Lyme disease.

Lyme Disease can be controlled by using preventatives. One of the best preventatives is checking your dog for ticks daily and removing any that have latched on to your furry friend. Normally it takes 24 to 48 hours to transmit the disease so time plays a big factor in prevention.

If your dog has had a tick, some of the signs to watch out for are lameness, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite and stiff and swollen joints, it can also affect the heart, kidneys and nervous system. If you think your dog might have Lyme disease it is vital to get your dog to the vet for treatment.

How to celebrate – Get informed and know what you are up against with Lyme Disease and remember you can get it too. You can find out more about Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses for your dog at PetMD.

Check your dog at least daily to make sure these parasites have not made your dog a host. This is a great preventive measure that can make a difference between finding them early and contracting Lyme disease.

Make sure to share about Lyme Disease during the month of April and help through sharing educational and information through Facebook or other social media.

Hazards – If your suspect your dog might have been exposed to Lyme disease it is always best to have the vet check out your furry friend. If left untreated your dog may end up with Kidney failure costing his/her life.
Gifts for dogs – The best gift is education and knowing what to look for if you suspect an infection of Lyme Disease. Remember prevention is always key and toss that furry friend a treat.
Annual Awareness Month

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month – What Can You Do To Help?

April is the month to celebrate Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Months raising awareness to issues that face our animals and communities each day.

What Is It – The ASPCA works hard to prevent animal cruelty in our Nation and declared the whole month of April as Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. Working to raise the awareness of animals that need our help and what you can do to make a difference.
Why Celebrate – Cruelty to animals is a huge issue that the supporters of ASPCA tackle each and every day. I know it is hard to think that people can be cruel when we look into the faces of our furry pals; however, cruelty to animals is real and it happens every day. This is why through the month of April the ASPCA asks for us to join in and help in the fight to end cruelty to our loving fur babies.

How to celebrate – There are many ways to get involved and help to share the awareness to help prevention of cruelty to animals and the ASPCA has a full outline of the ways to help, from Birthday Campaigns to Rock Star Dog Campaigns.

Social Media is another way to help people become aware of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. By posting on your social media more and more people become aware of the issues that our dogs face on a daily basis and have a chance to reach out and make a difference in their lives.

Hazards – Each day animals are living in cruelty that has to stop, during the month of April you can help spread the word and help the ASPCA to rescue, place and protect these vulnerable animals.
Gifts for dogs – If you are wanting to add a fur baby to your family the best gift you can give is through adoption and giving a dog a new cruelty-free home.
Annual Awareness Month

National Pet Month – Do You Know The Benefits Of Having A Pet In Your Family?

The UK celebrates National Pet Month in April and then the US jumps on board celebrating during the month of May. It is like a two-month celebration for our furry pals highlighting the joy and benefits of living with such awesome pets.

What is it – During the months of National Pet Month for the UK and US, we are reminded of responsible pet parenting, and how the companionship of our loving animals not only change our pet’s lives but how our furry friends benefit and contribute to our lives as well.
Why Celebrate – Those of us that are living with dogs know and understand many of the benefits of living with our furry friends and how they make our lives complete.

What better way to celebrate our dogs having a month-long celebration to brag about our dogs,  meet other pet parents, and share the love for our dogs with the world.

Let’s get started and find out how we can start celebrating National Pet Month and have some fun with our furry friends.

How to celebrate – There are many different days throughout the month of April and May to do just that, to name a few we see that we can celebrate our veterinarians, therapy animals, pet parents and even highlights on adoption.

Get on board with social media by posting lots of pictures of your furry pals and the fun they are having over the next couple of months.

Pack your pal up and go to that fun day organized by local charities, if you have any local, if not organize something to get pet parents together and socialize for a day. This can be a lot of fun for you and your furry friend.

This is a great time to get involved and thank our pet professionals for all they do and how they help us become better pet parents for our dogs.

Hazards – There is no harm in loving and sharing our dogs through the months of April and May so bring it on and have fun with it.
Gifts for dogs – Giving our dogs that special toy or that new bed is a great way to celebrate, of course, healthy treats are always a great choice according to our dogs. Maybe even matching shirts for you and your dog to wear on that special pet parent day.

Annual Week-Long Holiday

April 1st – 7th

International Pooper Scooper Week – Do You Scoop Poop?

This is week is devoted to the education and awareness to scoop the poop and make our world a better place to live.

What is it – You may be asking yourself, right now “Why scoop poop?”

This week was actually created by The Association of Professional Animal Waste Specialists (aPaws) to help educate people on why it is important to scoop poop.

The official aPaws Mission Statement is:

Our mission is to increase the level of awareness in the animal waste industry, to raise the level of the public’s awareness of our profession, and to create added benefits for our members.

Why Celebrate – So why are we celebrating this week-long holiday for dogs?

As you might see this is to promote a week of awareness to help people understand the importance of keeping your dog’s poop out of our communities, environment, and water tables and help to combat the health problems that this might bring to both humans and our furry friends.

How to celebrate – I am sure no one loves picking up poop out of our yards or along that daily walk, but someone has to do it, right? Keeping our communities and environment free from dog poop is a great way to celebrate this week and if you hire a weekly pooper scooper, make sure they know how much you appreciate them this week.

Awareness of how dog poop spreads disease in our dogs and humans is an important factor for this week, it is never fun to step in that pile of poo. The problem is when you walk in other locations and you can actually spread whatever disease an animal might have with the rest of the population, in some cases even to humans.

Let’s celebrate this week by taking the time to scoop the poop!

Hazards – There are definitely hazards related to not scooping the poop. According to an article on Huff Post Dogs may carry such things as giardia and parasites such as worms that can be passed to other dogs and in some cases, these types of diseases may be passed to humans as well.

My vet even warned me of parvovirus and that just walking in a contaminated area has the potential to bring these disease home to your own furry friend. We take more precautions now by disinfecting the soles of our shoes with sanitizing wipes. I don’t feel we can ever be too careful with our dogs.

Gifts for dogs – The industries have jumped on board for making it easier to scoop poop by providing poop bags, pooper scoopers and even convenient ways to house these items while on a walk to make our lives easier.
Annual Awareness Week

April 12th – 18th

National Dog Bite Prevention Week – All Dogs Can Bite.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week is all about education and preventing potential dog bites. If you think your dog won’t bite think again.

What is it – Every year the AVMA sponsors National Dog Bite Prevention Week to increase the awareness and education for you and your children of an estimated 4.5 million possible dog bites every year.
Why Celebrate – Dogs love their humans and many people feel their dog would never bite them, we would hope not, but in some circumstances, it could happen.

According to the AMVA, 56.7% of dog bites happen to children. Dogs can become irritated by noises or even children that do not give them their space when they want to be left alone. This can cause even the best dog to get irritated and cause the potential for them to get snappy or even bite.

The best way to prevent this is to make sure your dog has its own space where children are not allowed to antagonize your dog.

Any dog may have the potential to bite if they are scared by noises or in cases that the dog is under stress due to illness, protecting a litter of puppies or even during a thunderstorm.

If your dog is stressed in any way make sure you watch their body language to understand the potential and prevent a dog bite, just like humans a dog has a flight or fight response to due stress and may lash out.

How to celebrate – The best way to help spread the concern with dog bites is educating other people and especially your children on why a dog might bite. Always remember not to ever approach a dog that is not with their owner, as they might be frightened and have a greater chance to bite someone.

The AVMA promotes pet professionals to offer classes to educate the public. If you know of one of these classes, attend and find out how to prevent dogs from biting, this would be a great education for our children as well.

Education is a great start to prevent the possible dog bite and to make sure everyone is safe, so share your knowledge with others on social media or in your community.

Hazards – Dog bites are a potential issue anytime you share your home with a dog and can be a huge health risk if you are not aware of the problems that might cause that furry friend to bite. Read more about this on AVMA.
Gifts for dogs – Socializing your dog is the best gift for your dog starting at a young age, this helps them to understand how people and other dogs interact in the world around them and they tend not to become as frightened when something out of the ordinary happens.
Annual Awareness Week

April 17th – 23rd

National Pet ID Week – Lost Dogs Happen When You Least Expect It.

This week is dedicated to making sure your dog is properly identifiable in case the unexpected happens and you lose your dog .

What is it – National Pet ID Week is an annual dog holiday to celebrate the importance and awareness reminding pet parents of the need to make sure your dog is identifiable in case they are separated from you.

Why Celebrate – In the back of our minds we always know that there is a possibility that our dogs may run off and get lost, what do we do then?

This is where National Pet ID Week education might have an impact on us learning the importance of providing ID’s for all our dogs. A collar with identifying tags is a great place to start and fairly inexpensive, this allows someone that finds your dog to call you or get in touch with your vet.

Another option is having an up-to-date chip inserted in your dog so when scanned your information is readily available and provides a better chance you will find your dog again. These work without the collar and tags or in addition as tags and collars can always be forgotten or come off during your dog’s excursion.

How to celebrate – If your dog does not have a collar with complete tags identifying your name and phone number now is a great time to purchase these to have a little more peace of mind.

This is also a good time to have that micro-chip done for your pet or if your dog is already microchipped, make sure your information is up-to-date.

Start a campaign in your community or help out with an event that is already up and running to make sure all dogs are identifiable.

Share information with friends and family and make sure to post on social media the importance of National Pet ID Week.

Hazards – Without tags or a micro-chip is it very hard for someone to know who your dog belongs to if they are found and if you are not able to get your information to the right people there is a huge chance you may never be reunited with that furry pal.
Gifts for dogs – This is a great month to invest in that new collar complete with dog tags so that if your dog goes on holiday without your permission you have a better chance of finding them again. They make all kinds of different tags so find one that is just right for your dog.
Annual Awareness Week

April 19th – 25th

Animal Cruelty Week – How Is Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence Related.

Animal Cruelty Week brings awareness and understanding of what is cruelty and that cruelty to innocent animals is not right and has to stop.

What is it – Animal Cruelty Week goes along with Human Violence Awareness Week and observed the 3rd week of April Annually. Studies show when people are cruel to animals there is a good possibility they are also violent in human relationships. Here is a PDF showing the results of many studies on Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence
Why Celebrate – Animal cruelty is a serious matter that many times leads to domestic violence in the homes of the abusers. As we may know many states have laws for animal abuse; however, with the support of animal lovers nationwide it is now getting attention from the federal level.

With the new law signed by the president on November 25, 2019, Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture, or the PACT Act makes animal cruelty now a federal offense.

This is a good time to celebrate this holiday as cruelty to animals may now bring a jail sentence up to 7 years, so another step in the right direction to protect our fur babies from abuse.

How to celebrate – Learning and understanding the signs of animal abuse is a must to help protect our animals from abuse. Making a report if you suspect abuse is a way that you can help these animals.

Reporting may not only save the life of the animal but also the children and spouses that live with the offender.

The Animal Service League of Boston understands that mistreating animals is a big problem and has put together seven signs of animal cruelty. Check it out to learn more.

Not all people understand cruelty to animals, due to the way they were raised or just not knowing or understanding what is cruel. Spreading the word on social media exposes more people to the reality and education is critical to help stop animal abuse.

Get on board and help stop the abuse of animals.

Hazards – Abuse and neglect are real and the consequences can impact the lives of not only our animals but the families living with the abuser. Speak up and report anytime you suspect abuse.
Gifts for dogs – Stopping the abuse is the best gift you could ever give an animal, you are their eyes and voice, be heard. For your own furry friends, provide lots of love, healthy food, shelter, medical and a warm bed at night is a great gift.
Annual Awareness Day

April 4th

Tag Day – There Are Lots of Definitions of Tag Day, What Does It Mean For Your Dog?

You probably guess it! Tag Day is a day to make sure your dog has and wears their tags and the benefits that they provide if your dog is lost.

What is it – American Humane created “Every Day Is Tag Day” and the first Saturday of April is designated to the campaign that brings pet professionals, organizations and control agencies together to help pet parents understand the importance of providing ID tags to your loving pets.
Why Celebrate –  Is your pet protected? this is what Animal Humane along with many other pet professionals and organizations will ask when it comes to providing tags and/or microchips for your pets.

According to Animal Humane, only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that end up in shelters without some type of identification are reunited with their loving families. Those odds alone are reason to get your dogs tagged and microchipped and why celebrating tag day is so important for our furry friends.

How to celebrate – Make sure to get your dogs tagged and microchipped so you have a better chance of finding your furry friend if lost or separated from you.

As always help spread the word through your community and social media to have a greater impact on those that do not realize the statistics of getting your dog returned safely to you.

Hazards – You don’t want your dog and your family to end up as one of the statistics of dogs that are never returned home. Make sure to get tags and/or microchipped and wear them everyday.
Gifts for dogs – Collars and ID tags are great choices as gifts to help celebrate Tag Day.

National Hug Your Dog Day – Have You Hugged Your Dog Today?

April 10th is National Hug Your Dog Day and celebrates the bond between animals and humans. Show your dog how much you love them with a hug today.

What is it –  National Hug Your Dog Day is said to have originated by Ami Moore; however, I have found conflicting dates for this holiday for April and in September, maybe she created both days but found nothing conclusive. With me, I hug my dogs daily so we will celebrate and have fun with it and why not?
Why Celebrate –  The Wood Hound is firm believers in creating human-dog bonds with your dogs and makes this a great time to celebrate. If you want to find out more, check out my article on How To Bond With A Dog.

If you have a dog that loves hugs there are great benefits to hugging your dog, as it produces oxytocin for you and your dog, which is known as a love hormone helping both of you to create that human-dog bond and unconditional love.

The one problem with this holiday celebration is not all dogs like hugs, just like people not all dogs are alike and have different personalities. So what do you do if your dog does not like hugs on this day? Do something they really like.

How to celebrate – To celebrate National Hug Your Dog Day, give your dog a hug or cuddle up with that canine bestie and feel your bond grow stronger with your dog. Most dogs love the attention of their human friends and celebrating is a top priority for them, this is one reason they are always so happy to see you when you arrive home.

Another way to celebrate is to snap a selfie of you hugging your dog and post it on social media, this is a great way to show the world what your fur baby means to you.

Hazards – We discussed briefly above that not all dogs like hugs so before you go around hugging dogs all day make sure you know the dog and its likes and dislikes. If your dog feels uncomfortable they will pull away from your embrace, as they may feel confined and out of control. Be cautious and let children know that hugging dogs they do not know could result in a dangerous situation.
Gifts for dogs – A gift of love and a strong bond is priceless for your dog and of course a healthy treat is always a good choice.

National Pet Day – Let’s Celebrate a Day Just For Our Pets

Discover what makes April 11th a great day to celebrate National Pet Day. We all like celebrations and celebrating with our pets can be even more exciting and more fun.

What is it – In 2006 Colleen Paige, animal welfare advocate and creator of several holidays just for our pets, created National Pet Day on April 11th to celebrate the joy our pets bring to us and also a way to advocate for those pets needing homes in shelters and rescues.
Why Celebrate –  We love our pets and what a great day to celebrate. Our pets bring us unconditional love and also add to our health in many ways. We should show them our appreciation by celebrating this day with them.

If you have ever wondered where the term “Don’t Shop! Adopt!” came from? This is the holiday that made the term popular.

This holiday celebrated first in the US has managed to go international with many different countries joining in to celebrate National Pet Day. Even many celebrities have jumped on board to celebrate this day with their own pets.

As you can see all great reasons to celebrate whether with that pet that is special in your heart or adopting a new pet and changing its life forever.

How to celebrate – We know how special our pets are but do they know it? Even though we love our dogs every day, April 11th is a great time to show your dog more attention and let them know exactly how special they are.

You might want to take your dog for a special walk or find that perfect treat in order to thank them for making our lives truly amazing.

If you are planning to adopt a new furry family member April 11th is a great time to offer your home to that best bud for years to come.

We all love pictures of our pets and what better way to celebrate than posting pictures of our loyal furry family and tell everyone how important they are to have in our lives.

Hazards – As Understanding how wonderful our pets are the only hazard I can see for this special holiday is many of those special souls still living in shelters and rescues just waiting for that perfect family to take them in.
Gifts for dogs – A Let your imagination run wild and find that extra special gift for your dog. It might be a really cool toy, a new plush bed or even a great healthy treat. If you are adopting to celebrate this awesome day a warm home and family is the greatest gift of all.
Annual Appreciation Day

April 11th

Dog Therapy Appreciation Day – Joy Comes To Those Through Therapy With Dogs

As pet parents we understand the joy that dogs bring to our lives, April 11th is the day to not only celebrate our dogs but the therapy dogs that go out each and every day spreading that joy with others.

What is it – Dog Therapy Appreciation Day is to thank and show appreciation to the service they provide. Therapy dogs work with patients in a hospital, care homes and even children at schools just to highlight many of the roles they play.
Why Celebrate –  Therapy dogs have a different role than service dogs. As a therapy dog, they meet and greet many different people providing therapy through getting petted and just being present in hospitals, care homes, and schools.

A service dog has a job to do by taking care of just one person and provides the help that is needed by that specific person they do service for.

Therapy dogs have to have a people-friendly demeanor, well behaved and predictable. These are the traits that people look for when trying to get the role of a therapy dog. Therapy dogs meet many different people from day to day and need to enjoy mingling and getting petted by a variety of people in different settings.

The work that they do is given freely and normally on a volunteering basis, never asking for anything in return. This is why it is so important to recognize Dog Therapy Day and what they do for the community. Let’s do our part and thank these dogs and their handlers for the great job they do to provide therapy to all ages from young to old.

How to celebrate – If you are a hospital, school room or organization that has a therapy dog that comes to provide therapy throw a party. This would be good for the people and also for the dog as is shows them you care and love the service they provide. If food is involved always check with the dog handler to make sure what they can have, you never know if they are on a specific diet.

If you are the therapy dog parent, show some extra special attention to your dog on April 11th and thank them for everything they do. Don’t forget to take some credit for yourself as if it was not for you the therapy dog could not do their job.

As always put a big THANK YOU out on social medial thanking both the therapy dog and their handlers for the great service they provide.

Hazards – Not all dogs have the personality for being a therapy dog; however, any breed with the right personality may provide therapy services. Therapy dogs come big and small and if they are unpredictable someone might get bit if you are not careful so make sure they have the right disposition and personality is critical to the outcome of the therapy provided.
Gifts for dogs – If you are wanting to get a great gift for a therapy dog you might consider a brightly colored bandana that they can wear or even treats dog mom approved of course.

Easter Day – Human

Easter is normally centered around a religious holiday, with church food and spending time with family.

Of course, many people have incorporated the coming of the Easter Bunny, with Easter egg hunts and having a big gathering with family and friends.

This is also a good time to spend with your dog they like searching for Easter eggs too and they get out those professional sniffers just for the occasion. Please make sure the prize that they find are doggie friendly treats just for them. Make sure everyone knows chocolate and dogs do not mix.

Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day – Everyone is Beautiful Even Bulldogs

This is an unofficial holiday that shows the beauty of the Bulldogs and has a special meaning behind it to recognize not only Bulldogs but the beauty of all people alike.

What is it – In my research, I found National Bulldogs are Beautiful Day back on April 26, 2008, celebrating the second annual celebration. With this information, I am going to say this holiday dates back to 2007 and somewhere through history was changed to April 21st.
Why Celebrate – If you own a Bulldog you know exactly how beautiful they are. Even though they have saggy skin and squashed faces the people that love them understand that beauty lies within the soul. This day has really caught on and many celebrate this day with the beauty of wrinkly Bulldogs.
How to celebrate – Celebrations of Bulldogs are Beautiful day have been springing up every year with beauty pageants for Bulldogs and contests to enter.

If you are not a Bulldog parent you might now understand, but you might understand how much we love our dogs and they are all beautiful in their own way. This is exactly the message that is construed from Bulldogs are Beautiful Day.

Make sure on April 21st if you have a Bulldog to post their best picture on social media so everyone can share and support Bulldogs everywhere.

Hazards – Everyone and every dog is beautiful, we all know the effects of bullying and how others might not fit in. Take some time and raise someones self-esteem by pointing out something beautiful about the person, and don’t forget to kiss that beautiful dog.
Gifts for dogs –  It is time to show how beautiful your Bulldog is so let them know how much you love them with a special treat or awesome new clothes.

National Lost Dog Awareness Day – Lets Work Together To Get These Dogs Home

National Lost Dog Awareness Day is for people to become aware of all the dogs lost each year and to also celebrate those that have been found and reunited with their families.

What is it – April 23, 2014, marks the first annual awareness day created by Lost Dogs of America. This awareness day has been celebrated annually every year to help create the awareness of lost dogs throughout America through an all-volunteer organization. Check out the video.
Why Celebrate – According to Lost Dogs of American, not all dogs roaming are stray dogs, many are just lost from their loving families and cannot find their way back home.

It is a sad moment when your dog comes up missing. We do everything we can think possible to find them and get that family member back safe at home. Many times after searching day in and day out we finally give up and realize we may never see our beloved dog again. Do you know what to do if your dog comes up missing?

How to celebrate – Help reunite dogs with their loving families. Sign up for as a volunteer to Lost Dogs of America to get alerts when a dog goes missing in your area. Keep an eye out for the lost dog and if found help to get that dog back home to its loving family and away from danger and out of shelters or rescues.

Help spread the word through social media and your state to let people know there is help out there if a dog has gone missing. Lost Dogs of America has a great start and is on a mission to provide a comprehensive database that everyone uses to locate and get these dogs home to their family.

Hazards – Many times when our dog gets lost they end up in shelters or rescues to be rehomed and the not so lucky ones end up euthanized due to overcrowding or in a fatal accident. The faster you can recover a lost dog the better from you and your dog.
Gifts for dogs – Microchipping your dog and proper ID tags are a great gift just in case your dog ever gets lost. Having your dog registered and keeping your information up-to-date is important to bring your dog back home.

World Veterinary Day – Observed Around The World

We rely on our vets to keep our dogs healthy and safe from disease. Let’s all celebrate our veterinarians on this special day just for them and thank them for all they do.

How it originated – World Veterinary Day has been observed on the last Saturday in April since 2000. This day was created by the World Veterinary Association to recognized the dedication and work that Vets do globally.
Why Celebrate – As we realize just how important keeping in contact with our vet and the service they provide to our fur babies each and every day we understand more of why we should celebrate this global day just for the Veterinarians around the globe.

Our Veterinarian is there from the time we bring our furry friend home into our families until the day our loved ones leave us. They give our fur babies their first shots and diagnose any illness our pets may endure throughout their lifetime. They do their best to keep our pets healthy, happy and well-adjusted so we can spend as many great days as possible enjoying our special furry family members.

How to celebrate – Reach out to your vet and let them know just how important they are in the lives of our pets and how you appreciate their dedication helping guide us as pet parents and keeping our pet healthy.

Give a shout out to your vet on social media and let everyone know how they have helped you raise and maintain your furry family members throughout the years.

Gifts for dogs – Cherrish the health of your pet and always listen to the advice of your veterinarian.

National Pet Parent’s Day – A Day For You And Your Pet

Is your dog considered part of the family if so this day is just for you? National Pet Parents Day is to celebrate the bond and the joy created by living with those furry friends.

How it originated – National Pet Parent’s Day is an unofficial holiday created back in 2007 by Veterinary Pet Insurance to celebrate the bond between humans and pets and is always observed the last Sunday of April.
Why Celebrate – If you are already a pet parent you understand the work that is involved in being a pet parent and how the human-dog bond can help make our lives complete. This is a big day to celebrate here at The Wood Hound and if you are a pet parent, I hope you spend time celebrating with your favorite furry friend on this special day just for you.
How to celebrate – Today is your special day so do something fun with your pet and celebrate that bond that you share together. This can be something as simple as playing catch or taking your dog for a special walk.

Other ways to celebrate are taking a mini-vacation with your pet or going to that special place you and your pet adores. Relax and enjoy that special time to celebrate just for you and your pet.

Hazards – The only hazard I can see if your do not celebrate this day is if your dog finds out they will be sad that they missed this special day just for their pet mom or pet dad.
Gifts for dogs – Get you and your dog matching T-Shirts or book the weekend relaxing getaway to spend with your special fur baby.

National Kids & Pets Day – Every Child Should Know The Love of A Pet

I believe every child should have the chance to share that love and bond with a pet. April 26th is a great day to find out more and how our furry friends teach our children compassion and love for another living creature.

How it originated – This is one of those many holidays created by Colleen Paige, Pet Lifestyle expert, in 2005 this holiday was created to celebrate the bond between a child and pet and to help parents understand safety issues that need they need to be aware of for the sake of their children and their pets.

Why Celebrate – Children and pets are a match made in heaven as long as parents teach their children to love and respect their pets. Growing up I have always had a dog and into adulthood, the love of a dog has always been a priority. I have also given this gift to my children, and feel that the love and compassion my family have given and received from our furry friends is more than life can ever teach us and a bond with pets that will last a lifetime.

How to celebrate – Take this time to help your children understand that the love of our pets is unconditional and teaching our children to love and respect their pets teaches compassion for pets and will help them throughout their life, not only for a relationship with our pets but in human relationships too. Children that grow up with compassion and respect for pets have much better relationships with peers and loved ones alike.

Take time out of your busy schedule to take some pictures of your children and your pets to cherish for years to come. Your pet holds a special piece of your child’s heart and they will have a chance to look back and know the love of that special pet. Post to social media to show that child’s special friends and the love they share together.

Hazards – Make sure your child understands and respects your pets, pulling on their tails or ears, not giving they space or being mean in some way to their pet can have a bad outcome and the child could end up bitten. This is why it is important to teach your child the right way to love and treat their pets.

Always make sure when getting a pet to understand the best pet for your whole family and one that your child can love and spend many years with. Don’t leave pets alone with small children and give children a chance to learn, grow and love their family pet.

Gifts for dogs – A child that loves, respects, and cares for your dog can be the best gift for both your dog and your child, creating that bond is priceless.

InterNational Guide Dog Day – To Help The Visually Impaired Gain Independence

International Guide Dog Day is celebrated to thank those guide dogs specially trained for the visually impaired and those that train them.

How it originated – International Guide Dog Day is celebrated the last Wednesday in April annually to commemorate the work that guide dogs do on a daily basis to help their visually impaired handlers live more rewarding lives of independently.

Why Celebrate – To many of the schools that offer these wonderful dogs to people that are vision impaired it is like giving freedom to those that have been struggling for independence. These dogs are trained and socialized in many different aspects so they can provide eyes to their handlers as well as lifelong love and dedication.

Guide dogs not only help with the independence for their handlers but provide a trusted companion as well as boosting their esteem. Let’s celebrate and let these dogs know that the service they provide is unmatched and appreciated and don’t forget the trainers that help make this all possible.

How to celebrate – There are many different guide dog organizations that train these dogs from puppies to guide dogs. According to Guide Dogs of America, it takes approximately 48K to effectively train a guide dog in their program and this is all done with donations. There are many different ways to help and can be accessed by clicking on the get involved tab on National Guide Dogs of America. Donating is a great way to celebrate and know that you are helping make a difference in someone’s life.
Hazards – Guide Dogs are an important part of visually impaired persons’ lives. Make sure if you come across a guide dog and if they are wearing a vest to only approach the handler, do not ever try to pet the dog or give it food as they are working and could be distracting to the dog.
Gifts for dogs – If you can volunteer or donate to help train the best dogs available for the visually impaired and help to change a life, by making them more independent.

National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day – Change A Shelter Pet’s Life

April 30th is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day where many shelters participate to hopefully reduce the number of shelter pets by making people more aware and encouraging adoption.

What is it – I have not found any information leading to the origination of this day; however, this is a great day to celebrate and show support for all the dogs living in a shelter environment longing for that forever home. Will that new home be yours? Are you ready to Adopt?

Why Celebrate – There are many shelter dogs just waiting for that perfect family to call their own. In fact, according to shelteranimanlscount.org in 2018 alone, there were 3,328,789 animal intakes and approximately 56% of this number was dogs and that is only the shelters that reported full or partial data.

On April 30th every year many of the different shelters offer special incentives for people to adopt these loveable souls that so desperately want and need furever homes.

We understand that not everyone has the ability to run down to their local shelter an adopt but those that are thinking of getting a dog or a companion for a dog they already have, now is a perfect time.

When deciding on adoption make sure you get the right dog the first time as you see in the data below the 805,664 of these intakes were relinquished by their owner, due to many different reasons for not able to keep the pet any longer. This is why it is so important when adopting to make sure it is for life of the animal.

How to celebrate – Adopting a shelter pet is the best way to celebrate on National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and if this is how you plan to celebrate, please make sure you understand these pets are a responsibility needing food, shelter and medical care, so make sure that your budget allows for this along with making the right choice for the pet you adopt.  Many shelters can help you pick the perfect pet for your family on adoption day.

Find a Shelter Near You

If you find that right now is not the time to adopt then you can jump aboard and help these shelter pets in other ways by volunteering your time to visit with these pets at the shelter or list them on social media to help them get adopted. There are many different ways you can help your local shelter so get involved and ask your local shelter how you can help.

Hazards – Many shelters are overcrowded and do not have enough room for all the intakes they may encounter. Some of these pets are then euthanized. It is important to find these fur baby’s homes that they need and deserve. Let’s all work together and do our part and maybe even save a pet’s life all pets deserve a loving family to call their own.
Gifts for dogs – Give the gift of a forever home or get on the list to volunteer at your local shelter to make the lives of these shelter pets a whole lot better.

Dog Holidays In April Wrap Up

Wow! Until I began researching all the holidays for dogs in April I did not realize the mass amount of celebrations just for our furry friends. April really is a jam-packed month with something to learn and celebrate each and every day.

With so many awareness days this month, I want to make sure to bring your attention to making sure your dog is properly tagged and microchipped as we never know when that day might come that we might be separated from our loving dogs.

Spring is in the air and so is the time to celebrate during the month of April. Have you figured out what holidays you plan to celebrate this April? If you are having trouble choosing it might be a good suggestion to find out how we can help stop animal cruelty? Or help our shelters find homes for those furry friends that do not have furever homes. Oh! and don’t forget that First Aid Kit.

Make sure to wrap up April by spending some quality time with your dogs while celebrating Pet Parent Day and a day for children and pets. I really hope you give yourself a pat on the back and know that pets are family so you need to celebrate those times as you would with other family members.

The Wood Hound wants to wish everyone a fun-filled month of April and lots of celebration time and as always don’t forget the healthy dog biscuits.

Thank you for your support on this ongoing holiday for dogs project and thank you for helping to keep our dogs healthy, happy and well-adjusted.
