Is coconut oil good for your dog? A few years back I was studying the benefits of coconut oil for my own health and discovered many ways of how coconut oil benefits dogs. I thought coconut oil for dogs? So, I delved in to the research related to dogs and found that many people claim coconut oil is very beneficial to dogs in many ways.

Whаt Іѕ Сосоnut Оіl?

So we all know that coconut oil comes from the coconut? Yes. If you are like me, do you wondered where the coconut oil comes from? I know when you break open a coconut, you have coconut water inside and the coconut, and then the white fleshy meat grated into what everyone knows as loves as coconut.

Researching how coconut oil is made, I found that it is extracted from the meat inside the coconut, and then еxtrасted though two different processes either refined or unrefined.

Coconut oil in your kitchen is either solid or liquid depending on the temperature in you house as it has a very low melting point of 75 degrees Fahrenheit, so in my house mostly solid in the winter and liquid in the summer.

Due to the nature of coconut oil it is slow to oxidize and makes it more resistant to becoming rancid like many of your other oils creating a longer shelf life.

Most oil that we use every day consist of mostly omega 6 fatty acids, and then your healthier fats are omega 3, this is where coconut oil is different, as it is made up polyphenols and medium chain fatty acids and is processed by your dogs body quicker, inturn providing more energy and benefits to your dog.

Before discovering the benefits of coconut oil and how coconut oil benefits dogs, it was used mainly in cooking; however, now coconut oil is found in many applications from cooking to personal care and now for our dogs too. Check out what Dr. Karen Barker has to say about coconut oil benefits for dogs.

Problems With Coconut Oil For Dogs?

Within my research for coconut oil, I found that many veterinarians do not recommend coconut oil if you dog is overweight or susceptible to pancreatitis, due to high fat concerns.

I know my doctor warned of possible high cholesterol and vets agree, due to the high fat concerns. Is the 120 calories per tablespoon worth the possible benefits that you or your dog may reap? My cholesterol is the best it has been in years by adding a bit to my coffee each morning.

Another side effect regarding the use of coconut oil for dogs is the consideration of loose stools due to the extra fat content in their systems.

How to determine how much coconut oil to give your dog depends on weight, most experts that I found agree that 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds is a good recommendation. Starting your dog slowly by only giving ¼ of the recommended suppliment and working your way up is the best practice.

Bеѕt Kіnd Оf Cосоnut Oіl Fоr Уоur Dоg

When trying to decide the best type of coconut oil to feed your dog, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. How the coconuts are grown and processed can really make a difference whether your coconut oil comes out on top.

What I use for both me and my dogs is an extra virgin coconut oil that is certified organic, non-gmo, unrefined and cold pressed. I know that is a bunch of deciding factors all in one jar of coconut oil.

The reason for certified organic is that way we know that it was not grown with any fertilizers or pesticides that can compromise the coconut oil when using for health benefits, always check to see if it has the USDA organic symbol

Unrefined is extracted from fresh coconuts and is the best choice when extracting coconut oil; however, there are two ways of processing the unrefined oil by using expeller-pressed or cold-pressed.

The difference between the expeller-pressed and the cold-pressed process for coconut oil is basically the temperature. Though no heat is used in either process, the the way it is processed, expeller-pressed can exceed 200 degrees where cold-pressed is kept under 120 degrees.

The benefits of the lower heat in the processing of coconut oil is keeping all the natural benefits of the polyphenols and medium chain fatty acids; which, offer the antiflamatory and antioxidant benefits in your coconut oil.

Thеrе іѕ аnоthеr fоrm оf сосоnut оіl саllеd RBD, mеаnіng rеfіnеd, blеасhеd аnd dеоdоrіzеd. This really does not sound like something I want to feed my dog.

The refined coconut oil is actually baked first and then goes through a bleaching stage by filtering the coconut through a clay removing any insects or particles.

Due to baking the coconut at high temperatures at 400 degrees it has the potential to lose some of the nutrients that makes coconut oil beneficial for your dog.

Does Your Dog Like Coconut Oil

My dogs will just lick the coconut oil from the spoon; however, you might encounter a dog that does not like the taste of it so what do you do if that happens. My suggestion is to either add it to their food or get a little more creative and make them no bake coconut oil treats. I like this recipe because it is no bake and does not have the potential of exposing it to heat losing the beneficial properties of the coconut oil. Here is a recipe that I found from dogsville.com

My Thoughts On How Coconut Oil Benefits Dogs

I love the idea of how many benefits coconut oil may provide for my fur babies and use it on a regular basis both orally and topically. Does the coconut oil make a difference? I would like to think so. Do I recommend it? Absolutely; however, I always feel you should check with your vet before adding any supplements to your dogs diet.

How coconut oil benefits dogs? For Miss Priscilla, using it topically whenever she has a problem with flea bites, it keeps the itch down and minimizes the allergic reaction that she encounters to those pesky parasites.

I know that my older dogs, like Sassy, she seems to get around better than she use to, and has even dropped a few pounds; however, she is on a regimen of CBD Oil that may contribute to the better health and mobility. It really is hard to say at this point. If you would like to find out more about how CBD Oil benefits your dog check out my article on CBD Oil And Dogs.
